Definitely the best for your money in the market. Sounds with my Polk Audio (RM6750) in size. The ability to avoid making dynamic volume to adjust the sound and the bass on a film is priceless. 

The reason that the system deserves 4 stars instead of five is due to some problems with HDMI inputs. In my opinion, to be delivered when playing video from my cable box, Cablevision (Scientific Atlanta), it would flicker in and out, although the audio works. Later I discovered it was a problem with this Onkyo convert 24 bits to 30 bits coming out. I changed out of my receiver to a solid upconverting read that my problem solved. Not entirely sure the details, but it worked, and that is important. I understand this is a problem in other Onkyo receiver as well.

Very Good product. This is my second Onkyo, the other is in my theater. This has less features but the set up was very easy. One of the main features I wanted on this receiver was the ZONE 2. I am able to let the grandkids watch TV on the main receiver and I am able to play CD’s out in the backyard for the adults. The ZONE 2 has no loss of fidelity so it sounds just like we are in the main listening area. I also used the speaker that comes with the receiver to set up my receiver. Since I have speakers in the ceiling I wasn’t sure that it would work as well but was pleasntly surprised that it set it all up without any problems. This is a great value.

Great value

I replaced my aging tank of a receiver, the Onkyo DS-TX575x. Which was about 10 years old! With the advent of HDMI connections in everything else I own, I figured it was time to retire it. The SR508 setup was pretty simple. The calibration microphone and on-screen menu was quite helpful. Neither of these features were available on my old receiver. The sound quality is excellent. I’ve got it connected to some fairly old “Energy” speakers, which are modest, but still make some great sound. The only issue I’ve experienced so far is sometimes when trying to play a PS3 game, the receiver doesn’t always seem to pick up the right audio stream, and I have to exit out of the game then restart it. This may just be a mis-configuration on my part. Other minor complaint, this unit doesn’t have the same look & feel as the old 575x I had. The volume knob appears to be plastic, my old 575x had a nice metal one that had extremely smooth action. The SR508 also seems to get noticeably warmer in the upper right area of the unit. I imagine this is normal, but again my old 575x never got this hot. 

For about 0, it’s hard to beat this unit and it’s plethora of features, I think it would meet most peoples needs. I feel pretty confident so far that this unit will be as reliable as my old Onkyo.

Oustanding value: Big features for a small price

This amplifier offers enough features that are found in higher end receivers to make it an outstanding value for the price. 

I replaced a Sony GA7ES/Yamaha DDP-1 combination with this Onkyo to power a 5.1 speaker configuration. I have a FiOS cable box (HDMI), a Panasonic upconverting DVD player/recorder (HDMI) and an old Technics CD player (RCA) all hooked up with output in a 5.1 speaker configuration. The difference in sound was substantial even before any calibration was done. The The Audyssey 2EQ Acoustic Room Correction alone makes this receiver well worth the money. The substantial number of presets are all pretty spot on and quite sufficient for decent sound output. The HDMI pass-through is a big plus since it eliminates running another set of cables from the cable box to the television (a Sony KDL-52W4100) as a by-pass. All said, set-up is an absolute breeze. I would be remiss if I did not mention the clean lines and uncluttered face with well-spaced/placed knobs and buttons. While the remote lacks back-lighting, it is very easy to program and the buttons are laid out nicely (it does have piano black face that picks up fingerprints, if you’re picky like that). 

This affordable receiver from a respected brand comes with the bloodlines of more expensive counterparts and packs a punch that will please both the home-theater novice as well the cash-strapped audiophile. Undoubtedly best in class.

A “perfect” reciever for all of your home needs.

Very rarely is there something I am willing to label as “perfect” when it comes to electronics. There is always something that can be improved/changed/modified to fit one’s needs. However, I am willing to say that the Onkyo TX-SR508 is a “perfect” piece of electronic equipment. Quite simply, if you compare all of its features, ease of use, quality of sound, and its price, there is nothing better out there. 

Some of these features include plenty of ways to connect audio and video (it has every imaginable combination of audio inputs I need, making it “perfect” for me). This includes HDMI 1.4, 4 HDMI inputs, 2 fiber-optic audio, many standard audio inputs, and even the ability to output the receiver’s menu and setup displays onto your TV via HDMI. It also has the Onkyo port for the iPod doc. It is possible for someone out there to need MORE that inputs than this receiver has (I am using a DVD player and DVR box), but it has everything I need in terms of features and future-proof connectivity. 

One of the most impressive elements of the TX-SR508 is the ease of use. Within seconds, I was accessing the menu and making the changes needed for my system. I have another Onkyo receiver from a Home Theater in a Box set, but this TX-SR508 is significantly easier to use. Without the manual, I understood each menu and what was contained in the sub-menu. I was able to set my system for 3 speakers, their size, and their distance from my ears. I was even able to adjust the sound level from each speaker (I keep the center louder than the left and right). I was able to select the different Dolby settings for my preferences, and the receiver will automatically detect any digital inputs I am using (like a DVD compared to different settings that TV stations use). I could not ask for a simpler device. 

Of course, we buy receivers for sound, and I have always been impressed with the way Onkyos sound (which is why I own 2 of them). I am using Klipsch speakers–the front is the Klipsch WC-24 and the left/right speaker is the Klipsch XB-10. Paired with the TX-SR508, this makes for a HUGE improvement over anything else I have had in the past, since I was using the TV’s speakers. Sounds are clear, responsive, and distinct. Voices come out the center loud and clear, and ambient noise and music come out the left and right. I am currently using the Dolby Digital Pro Logic II Movie setting, since I feel it gives all TV shows the most audio depth. I have cranked the volume up a few times (like for a music video and some sporting events) and I hear no flaws from the speakers and the receiver. I am picky about audio, and in all of my research, I found that Onkyo receivers match nicely with Klipsch speakers. I could not be happier with the sound quality. 

With all of this said, compared, and processed, you can see why I label this as “perfect” when you think about its cost. I have been to stores with high end receivers on display costing over ,000. I have listened to them and compared their features. And I honestly believe the features, ease of use, quality and price on the TX-SR508 make this receiver a best choice out there for a home theater system.

Best bang for the buck!!!

I bought this to replace my Sony receiver I purchased from Amazon 3 years ago (almost to the day). While there was nothing “wrong” with my Sony receiver, I quickly realized once I plugged the Onkyo in, that my surround speakers were not being utilized as they should be. 

While I am not an audiophile, I do have some quality speakers, and I do like having a quaility sound while watching movies (and playing Xbox). The sound is so clear and crisp with this receiver. Further, the set up with the 4 HDMI inputs made my stereo cabinet so much cleaner, and I got rid of all of my YRW and RBG wires. I am sure I could have invested another 0 and really got some really high end equipment, but honestly, the Onkyo is worth it. The funny thing is, I spent the same amount on the new Onkyo as I did on the old Sony, and the difference is just amazing. 

The on-screen set up is great. It makes customizing the inputs and the equilizer so easy. And the speaker test really lets you know what where you need to place you speakers. What else can I say about this product? Honestly, this is the best purchase I have made in a long time. I think the 4 HDMI inputs alone make this a must-have over any other receiver similarly priced. I almost bought another Sony instead of the Onkyo (mostly because I have never purchased anything other than Sony receivers), but I am glad I made the switch. Now that I have experienced Onkyo, I think I have made a life long switch. 

If you have any hesitations about buying this product, please feel free to send me a message, and I will try to answer your question before you buy. And if you have never bought an Onkyo before, try it first, and I am pretty sure you will like it (I would almost guarantee it). If not, return it to Amazon. They are really good with returns. But I doubt you will even want to return it once you get it set up.

While many detectors can, in theory, detect a radar signal up to five miles away, in the real world those conditions are rarely ever met. So, when you are considering a detector, look to how the detector was tested.

Also consider the K Band weight in the overall score of the radar detector. There are two types of radar, K Band and Ka Band. Most sources cite Ka Band as the bigger threat of the two, so when you are checking out how a detector scored, keep this in mind. A high K Band performance and a low Ka Band performance will have to be treated accordingly.

Also make sure to take note of how many false alarms a detector raises. If two detectors are rated equally and one produces far more false signals, then obviously one will be better than the other for your needs.

How clunky a detector’s shape and weight should also be taken into consideration as you are selecting the one for your car. The difference between different models should not be underestimated. Also to be taken under thought in this same area is how long a power cord is. Given that some states frown rather seriously upon the use of radar detectors, having a slight, easily stowable detector might be a good thing for you.

Is Your Radar Detector Up To Date With The Latest Frequencies?

If you’ve ever had the joy of riding along, radar detector online, only to be pulled over by a hidden cop, then there is some news that you might have an interest in hearing. Many of the radar detectors on the market today are not as functional as they claim. In fact, many of them absolutely do not work under real, working conditions. This is due in large part to the development of new radar guns which the police have been only too happy to put into use.

The newer radar guns use a cutting edge radar technology that is called digital signal processing, or DSP. This new technique makes new guns so fast that they are always faster than your twitch reflex of hitting the brakes. Modern radar guns use Ka band frequency, which uses a very high bandwidth, which is more than fifty times higher than previous, X band radar guns. This means that detectors have a much harder time finding the signal from radar guns. Now, detection signals can work anywhere in the spectrum available, and a radar detector isn’t sure which will come at it. So it has to scan the entire length of possibilities, which takes time and reduces detection range, which means that they become less effective.

What’s more, instead of having to measure the speed of each car individually, modern radar guns have a program which allows them to measure the speed of the fastest moving vehicle in their range. That means that even if you are hiding behind a semi he he he truck, the police will be able to find your speed. Tough luck, eh?

And things are getting rapidly worse. As the number of old style X band radar guns decreases and the new ones increase, the number of effective radar guns will go down as well.

So, now you will have to do some homework and check out the ratings available that treat radar detectors. Depending on your particular situation you may want to look for a detector that is rated highly for hi way driving. Or if you do most of your commuting in the city, then you may want a detector that has a well designed filter that will cut down on false alarms but not greatly lose range of detection.
Whatever detector you choose, you’re going to have to live with the fact that detectors are going to have to continue evolving to match the continually evolving threat of radar guns, and that no one detector will keep you safe now, or forever.
