Going from CRT to This…WOW!

I can’t think of much about which to criticize this television. The picture quality is fantastic. Use HD cable, Blu-ray, or DVD, and you’ll be flabbergasted, especially if you’re moving from CRT to LCD like I was. 

The TV speakers are simply passible; you’re likely going to use a Home Theater System if you’re in the market for a TV like this. I’m using it with a Yamaha RX-V467 receiver, Polk Audio SurroundBar, Polk Audio PSW10 Sub, Sony BDP-360 Blu-Ray, Pace HD Cable Box (Time Warner), and a Nintendo Wii. All look and sound great together. 

Consumer Reports gave similar TVs low marks for viewing angle, but I think it’s fine (at least in my house); don’t know anyone who wants to watch a flatscreen TV at a 10-degree angle anyway. Make sure you turn on the Motion Plus and depth-of-black options to mitigate those issues, or you’ll notice some anomalies. 

The remote is very easy to use; no issues at all. Only controls the television (and maybe other HDMI-CEC components attached). Don’t view it as a universal remote…I bought the Logitech Harmony 300 remote, which works great with all my components. 

The Internet and streaming functions NOW mostly work as advertised by Samsung, including Netflix. Netflix did not work at first (it’s a new television in 2010), but a recent firmware fix in May 2010 alleviated that annoying issue. I use the Samsung WiFi adapter to connect to our home network (Apple Airport Extreme). No problems watching HD movies via Netflix. 

Negatives: 

If you unplug the television for any reason or lose power, you’ll lose most of your settings and need to enter most of them again. This includes reactivating the motion controls and depth-of-black settings (very important for an LCD television). 

Needs a Samsung wireless adapter for WiFi Internet (). Works great, but it also takes up one of your two USB ports! Still can’t get my account Favorites on YouTube…keeps throwing up an error. All the other Internet “apps” I’ve tried work fine, though, including Netflix (after the May 2010 firmware fix). Does not feed the Internet connection to other components via HDMI (so it’s HDMI 1.3). Too bad. You’ll need a separate connection for your Blu-Ray (for BD Live and other updates) or other Internet-savvy components. 

Don’t know if this TV supports audio return channel via HDMI; I haven’t tried it. For audio from Internet apps, I simply made a TOSLINK connection back to my Yamaha receiver. Perfect! You could also just use the audio from the television (again…passible; spring for the TOSLINK cable). 

HDMI for Blu-Ray works great! HDMI for the Pace Cable Box…not so much (constant “blinking” for about 20-30 seconds when changing channels), but this may be the fault of the receiver or cable box.

Best I’ve ever owned, picture really grabs you

we already had 4 HDTVs when I bought this one on 5/2/10- Sony 46″, Sharp Aquos 65″, Samsung Touch of Color 52″, and Panasonic plasma 58″. All but the Sony are less than 2 years old- and all look good. But that Samsung Touch of Color really stood out. The picture has always been a real step above the others. So, we went to Best Buy to look at the latest Samaungs, and ended up buying this one. 

I have never seen a picture like it. It looks 3 dimensional- you can really place people and scenery in space. It’s almost eerie. Another reviewer has complained of flash lighting- but I can’t see any evidence of it. Plus the thing is energy efficient- 190w max- less when back lighting is down (which everyone will turn down I’d expect- it’s very bright). It’s better at not reflecting light than plasmas for sure- another plus- and looks great when the room is brightly lit. It’s quiet when on- no “buzz”- and it’s relatively cool. 

I’ve (unfortunately) sent back large TVs in the past- including a 65″ (which Amazon was great about). I couldn’t be happier with this one- so far at least. 

*edited 5/8/10- netflix streaming nor Blockbuster streaming worked initially- but a firmware release in early May corrected this. Apps work fine- and VuDu works great and streams in 1080p/24 with Dolby Digital sound anyway- so it’s a better source for great looking content. Currently Netflix still sends only stereo (dolby prologic II) audio…

The Maruti Cervo is all set to give competition to the higher models of Tata Nano. It is being speculated that the Maruti Cervo would be priced between Rs 1.5 – Rs 2 lakh. The car is a five door hatchback model and has a spacious passenger cabin. It would come with a 0.7L, 660cc petrol engine with a claimed fuel economy of 21-22kmpl. Braking system in Maruti Cervo will be conventional type that will follow front disc and rear drum brake. We can’t expect ABS system in this price range. The car will also house newer shock absorbers. The suspensions are responsible for smooth driving which not only increase riding pleasure but safety also.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

Popularly called Evo X, the car would be available in 5-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed twin clutch transmission. The price tag is expected to be around Rs 30 lakh and this launch is a part of the revamped strategies by Mitsubishi Motor. The car’s engine would have turbocharged MIVEC technology that controls valve timing electronically. The top speed of the Indian EVO X will be 250 kmph.

Toyota Avanza

Toyota Avanza is to be positioned below the Toyota Innova and likely to be a sort of mini Innova. The MUV (Multi Utility Vehicle) is expected to be priced between Rs 6 – 9 lakh. The Toyota Avanza might have the 1495cc engine present in Thailand model. This 1.5L petrol engine consists of 4 cylinder, DOHC 16 valve matted with VVTi technology.

Maruti Kizashi

Kizashi is Maruti Suzuki’s first product in the all-wheel-drive sport sedan segment. Kizashi falls in the D segment and is expected to come with a 2.4 AWD engine sporting 18 inch alloy wheels and a 425 Rockford Fosgate audio system with iPod and bluetooth connectivity. The car is expected to cost around Rs 12 lakh. The car reached North American showrooms in December last year and so far about 300-400 units have been sold. Suzuki showcased all four trims of the 2010 Kizashi at the Chicago Auto Show in February.

Skoda Roomster

Skoda Roomster will come as a five door MUV from Skoda’s stable. The MUV is likely to get 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines and 1.4-litre and 1.8-liter diesel engines. The Skoda Roomster would compete with Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Captiva and Toyota Fortuner and would fall in the price range of Rs 16-18 lakh.

Toyota Etios

This is Toyota’s first hatch especially designed for India. The car is suppose to have DOHC 16-valve engine with a 1200cc displacement and is expected to be priced around Rs 5 lakh. Toyota would be manufacturing Etios in both hatchback and sedan variants. Etios was at display at the Delhi auto Expo 2010 and evoked curiosity among onlookers. The hatch and notchback segment of Etios have a sharp and big smiling grille that has been high-mounted especially for India and give the car a very tough look. The launch date is not yet confirmed but as per the speculations in the market Etios is expected to hit the roads by 2010 end.

I have a large FROG PSW10 / in (30 ‘x 20′). Half of the volume provides more than enough power to fill the room belongs clean low end. This is (also) in combination with a set of Polk Monitor 50 towers and a Polk center channel. It is ideal for music and movies. For music, you hear notes that even with tower speakers had not heard before (such as maintenance of the trap). For movies, the difference night and day. The range may vary from narrow (shots) to (helicopter taking off), with clarity and simplicity. You can feel the beat / effects, but it is never to confuse. 

The performance of this subwoofer (like most) is highly dependent on positioning. I can put it in the corner in front of my room, and offer solid bass, but with many flowers. I can transfer them to another place, and feels weak. When I “right place (pictured at right angles to the front wall, back to several meters) space provides a strong, firm, clean, sound and feel low. Who has not experienced and did not need the woofer (Search Google relocate for “placing the subwoofer) is a massively bad for a home theater room (ie, floor to ceiling glass), or large in a room. 

This subwoofer, if they are right, it should offer great performance for almost any user.

Works fine for a basic sub

I bought this for my garage to fill in the bottom end of some bookshelf type speakers. It does the job well and so far I have no complaints about the sound. I wasn’t going for audiophile quality in the garage but there is no reason to think this would work fine for a small system in the house. The one thing that I didn’t care for on this product was the design of the grill. It’s made of some kind of curved plastic covered with fabric instead of a rigid frame of wood. Aesthetically it looks alright but the grill is open on the top and bottom (not flush to the speaker face) so the value of the grill as a dust shield is impacted. If you use this sub indoors instead of a dusty garage, that point should be of little consequence to you.

If you are looking for a sub in a bedroom,office,college,bathroom…. than this will do just fine. I’ve matched this sub with a Yamaha Soundbar in my bedroom, and it sound good. It is just what the doctor ordered. For true dynamic home theater capabilities please don’t be cheap, look for a more dynamic sub. A good sub will make or break a hometheater. spend half of your speaker budget on a good sub for hometheater. I think after the TV and the center channel speaker, the sub should get the $$$$ priority

I hooked this up thru the high level speaker inputs using 10 gauge wire. With the volume set at halfway the house was rattling and shaking so I turned the volume down to 1/4. To relieve the fronts of bass duty I turned up the low pass crossover to 140hz. The bass is tight, thumpy, well defined but not muddy or boomy sounding. Though I bought this item primarily for DVD movies I’m really impressed how well it sounds when playing all types of music. This sub performs well beyond the built in 50 watt amp’s power rating. The only cheap thing about this sub is the price. I highly recommend it.

Remarkable

Don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said already. My 12″ C/V downward firing sub-woofer finally stopped working and bought this based on reviews and price. I was amazed at how well it worked! 

Where I had to turn my old sub-woofer volume all the way up to notice its effect this speaker provides nicely blended bases with the volume at less than half. It produces nice, round sounds. Nothing tinny or distorted. Finally, it works in a fairly large space, 20×35. 

For the price I paid, or even a bit more, I couldn’t be happier. 

I’ve made two “quality” speaker purchase recently from Amazon, this one and the Clips B-2 Synergy Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Pair)). Buying speakers is very subjective and I based my purchase decision on the reputation of the manufacturers, the sale price, and the review comments. In both cases I was extremely satisfied and want to share my opinion that price of these speakers, perhaps even a bit more, I couldn’t be happier and suspect you will feel the same.

Great Sub for the Price

I’ve been looking for a new sub for awhile and couldn’t believe when Amazon has it on sales at just , when Best Buy is still selling at 9.99. Better yet, I ordered on May 20th with free super saver shipping and yet it arrived just 2 days later, on today the 22nd. 

The sub is simple looking but that’s a good thing, as I do not want the sub to stand out. Set up is simple and the sound is rich. For , you just can’t get a better deal than this!!!
